WXCU Radio is Capital University’s student run radio station. I started as a DJ in August 2022, then became the social media director in January 2023, then served as general manager from August 2023 to December 2024.

WXCU Day

WXCU Day is Capital University’s music festival that takes place in the spring semester. This tradition started in Spring 2024 and is gearing toward the next WXCU Day, taking place in April 2025. WXCU Day started as an idea from my professor, after she mentioned we could do “some big event in the spring”.

With that idea, I created a new music festival that included three Capital University based bands, a Tortilla food truck, a bounce house, and various lawn activities. WXCU Day turned into the second most attended Capital University event for the 2023-2024 academic year, with around 200 students checking in to the event along with parents, grandparents and students sitting inside and outside the cafe watching.

One of these activities included the Kappa Sigma Tau volleyball tournament for charity. Their charity raised money for Veteran Companion Animal Service, which raises money for service animals for veterans. While the music festival was happening, one of the members of the fraternity came up to me and said that WXCU Day was the biggest and most organized event that they had ever been involved with.

The Audio Engineering Society, AES, was a student organization that I heavily depended on. I still have no concept of what it takes on the technology side to put on such an event. Thankfully, we had many connections that led us to collaborate with AES, with them sending around 40 students to help us during the day.

My role in this process was about as everywhere as can be. I was in charge of the communication between everyone involved, budgeting, planning and execution, scheduling and more. From start to finish, this process took a little over three months. On top of this, I was still a full time student along with working full time. There was something happening every day, whether it was answering emails, phone calls, problems, etc. Although stressful at times, everything paid off in the most perfect way possible and it is something I am still proud of.

The General Manager’s Handbook

I made The General Manager’s Handbook to help future general managers who are just starting out. It lays out everything from making an event to making schedules and gives clear instructions on important details.

I started making a document of the mistakes I made during my first semester as general manager and it soon became into more of a booklet for people to follow. In my second semester as general manager my professor asked if I was able to make some sort of handbook to pass down after I am gone, to which I told her that ten pages were already complete.

This handbook could be used by other student organizations, but it is geared more toward WXCU Radio in many aspects.

wxcuradio.com

During my last semester, I created the new WXCU Radio website because our old one was hacked before I took over as general manager. Although the university has not published it yet, shown are a few screenshots from this website.

Included in the website is the live broadcast, highlighted student projects, how to join the organization and more.

Post Graduation

After graduation, I talked to my professor about my time as general manager. In my first three semesters of WXCU Radio, the class size for the DJs was around 10-15 students, but after WXCU Day my professor said the class size has increased to around 30 students. At Capital University, the average class size is around 20 students, and I am so happy that I was able to help in getting more people involved in the radio. The class originally had a waitlist, but the university approved the class size to be raised from 20 people to 30.

Most people on campus didn’t know that we had a radio station, which is something that I realized when I was promoting WXCU Day. I am so proud looking back at the hard work that I put in to get the radio prevalent on campus again, and I look forward to what the next generation of students do with it.
